Access to funding for public school programs, particularly (but not limited to) those in the
arts, music and outdoor education, has never been more competitive.  We work directly
with teachers and administrators to put money into the areas that need it most. Through
the annual Taste of Basalt benefit, BEF is proud to have raised money to support a host of
school programs.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Students participate in many outdoor education opportunities funded, in part, by BEF.
Fourth grade students culminate their environmental education week at the Aspen Deaf
Camp, 5th graders attend Anderson Camp, and 6th graders enjoy a trip to Arches National
Park in Utah. Grants are also provided for programs in partnership with the Aspen Center
for Environmental Studies and the Roaring Fork Conservancy. Additionally, we have helped
purchase equipment and supplies such as snowshoes allowing teachers to create their
own outdoor adventures.

ART
BEF purchased a digital kiln for the elementary school, allowing students the opportunity to
work on beautifully finished clay projects. We have also funded special projects in faux
painting, sculpture, and photography and contribute to the purchase of new art supplies
each year. This year, high school students will show off their work on new display boards
supported by BEF.

"Thank you for your generous donation for a collaborative outdoor sculpture
at BMS!
Guinevere Jones, Art Teacher and the BMS students

MUSIC
In the last five years, BEF has purchased several thousand dollars worth of musical
instruments for the band and music departments, allowing all students the opportunity to
learn music at school.

"Thank you so much...We often struggle to do so much with so little around
here and this is just fabulous."
Katie Hone Wiltgen, Band & Choir Director

THEATRE
BEF funds are used to build sets and produce plays in Basalt schools. This year's high
school musical,
West Side Story, was supported by  BEF. We have also spent several
thousand dollars upgrading the sound and light systems at the auditorium used by all
three Basalt schools. Now all children can be seen and heard during performances!

BOOKS AND RESOURCES
A large portion of Taste funds have been used to purchase and replace library books,
teacher resources, and computer programs.

"It is critical to update and replace grade level books in our collection if we are
going to keep children interested in reading...your donation was vital to
keeping our library current."
                                                                                                  Suzanne Sherry, BES Librarian

CREATIVE EDUCATION AND SCHOLARSHIPS
BEF sponsors annual memorial scholarships in the names of Basalt students, and Mary
Holloran, the beloved BES music teacher. The first scholarship goes to graduating seniors
who have been accepted into college.  The Mary Holloran scholarship is awarded to a
graduating 4th grader to continue his or her music education. Recipients of these
scholarships for 2011 will be announced soon.

GRANTS FOR EDUCATION
This year, BEF expanded it fundraising efforts with a new grant-writing committee. This
volunteer parent group works with Basalt school teachers to apply for funds through
specific local and national grant-giving organizations.
