While the mission of the Basalt Education Foundation is to enhance education in Basalt public schools, BEF also supports eligible graduating seniors who strive to continue their academic careers on a path consistent with high achieving Basalt students.  Basalt Education Foundation is one of over 35 local scholarship funds and foundations that support and award deserving seniors on the road to a  secondary education.

Each February, Seniors are welcomed to apply for available local scholarships through a common application organized by Basalt High School.  BEF board members and select community volunteers read applications each March in search of high achieving students who might need help launching themselves to college.  Basalt High School hosts an awards night each April, announcing the winners of all the applicable local scholarships.

Since this BEF scholarship program was pioneered in 2015 by original BEF board members Erika Leavitt, Kristen Maley and Tara Haas, BEF has awarded a total of $70,000 among 40 seniors.  Funds come to BEF through sponsorships and at donor direction.

We are delighted to announce that in 2019 the Basalt Education Foundation proudly awarded $31,500 in college scholarships, including the George and Lee Rittvo Scholarships and the Chiara Del Piccolo Scholarship!

“While our foundation’s priorities are still to donate to teachers directly and fund administrators’ visions for excellence on campus, these scholarships are our way of celebrating and supporting exemplary Basalt students who deserve to have their academic efforts and community mindfulness rewarded,” says Kristen Maley, chair of the BEF Scholarship Committee.

2019’s recipients were Sara Borchelt, Zoe Burns, America Ceja – Lee Rittvo Scholarship, Jaden Costello, Spencer Ellsperman, Colin Hipona, Joseph Loyd, Megan Maley – Chiara Del Piccolo Scholarship, Lilah Montgomery, Emily Northrup, Jake Reardon – George Rittvo Scholarship, Natalie Simecek, and Yessenia Soto.

Thanks to your ongoing support of the Taste of Basalt, as well as an increasing number of individual and corporate donations to BEF, our scholarship program keeps growing.  If you would like to donate to BEF’s scholarship awards program, please email Kristen Maley or donate to BEF directly, via our website.
